A car that would likely be even slower at rallycrossing than the RallyMetro.

No, I’m not actually going to do it. It’s a dumb fun idea though.

My parents are probably going to pickup a Nissan xtera that has a check engine light for $300. If I can fix it ( it may be the catalytic converter).... they may get it plated.

I feel like the length and overhangs would be detrimental in rallycross.

Want to rally? Get a rally car!(comes pre-damaged!)

DO IT!

This is in no way a terrible idea.

Someone locally does this with an old Merc d iesel. Courses are mostly flat-out in that thing. It’s wonderful. The ultimate momentum car.

Too bad it’s not an automatic.  For a grand it could be fun.

That’s pretty much how it was in the RallyMetro. A Festiva popped up for sale for $295. When I mentioned that to a guy I run with, he said, “You’ve gotten good enough at this, that you really aughta buy yourself something with more than 100 hp.”

I’ve been seriously considering a ratty 9 44, but I’m scared of buying Porsche parts.

At least get a turbo 300, that will be way more interesting. The suspension is already set up for rally from the factory

Why not? I love this idea! No idea how bad parts costs are, but if they’re not terribad, why not?

Honestly, b ecause I’d like my next one to be quicker. I think this would actually be even slower.

I was joking.  An automatic 240D will maybe be the slowest car you’ve ever driven.

Gotcha. I've heard they're unbelievably slow.

Kinja'd!!! WilliamsSW > shop-teacher
11/29/2018 at 22:35

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, I could see that. A 240d auto would definitely be slower. A 4 speed is probably still slower than a Metro with all of its gears intact.

They’re not terrible, TBH. It’s cheaper than my Mitsu to keep going. Lots of aftermarket and junkyard support, plus plenty of cheapskates making them work on the forums out there.

I suspect 0-60 is no better than ~20 seconds, even if in fine tune.  Add several seconds to an automatic, maybe closer to 30.

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s kind of impressive, in a terrible way.

Made for malaise era road speeds and sold to a usually older and patient demographic who wanted jewel like build quality and the potential of a decades-long lifespan rather than speed.

I would argue something that slow is rather dangerous. Merging on to the highway at a safe speed would be impossible in many places.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > shop-teacher
11/30/2018 at 09:29

Kinja'd!!!1

I definitely agree. A 240D manual probably crosses that line. 0-60 in more than 15 seconds or so probably counts as dangerous in many wide open high volume suburban driving environments. Some of these old diesels also have top speeds of around 70 mph - and it will take an eon to get there. Not good for an evasive maneuver, not to mention the ire you create behind you.

I can’t see how anyone in, say, Detroit, could drive such a car, with its fast traffic and short 1930s style on ramps.  Then again, I saw zero old MBs there, so that might answer it.

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > fintail
11/30/2018 at 10:44

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, there are certain on-ramps in C hicago  where trying to merge onto the Dan Ryan in one of these would amount to suicide and/ murder.

I stopped seeing old diesel Mercs in the late 90's. I knew a couple people who drove them back then, and they were extremely rusty and crusty. I don’t think I’ve seen one on the road in at least a decade, could be 15 years.

What about a new beetle? Those have gotten pretty cheap, and have some oomph.

I love the 944 idea btw

Eh, if I'm going to buy German parts, it better be for something I really want ... Like a 944.

Kinja'd!!!0

I think I remember driving on that, I drove all over when I was there. I do remember a north-south route that reminded me of a 1930s parkway.

I see old diesel MBs almost every day here.  They can rust, but I think it takes them around 40 years to get rusty here.

The Dan Ryan is the North-South bit of expressway, with entrance ramps that are only a few hundred feet long, and drop you basically blind into the fast lane.

Now that I look at it, the one I am thinking of is called “Edens”, at least according to google maps.  I see I drove on Dan Ryan on my way back from MI - traffic was jammed to a halt at 1pm.  Reminded me of home.

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > fintail
12/01/2018 at 16:00

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, if you go North on the Dan Ryan, and hang a right at the split it turns into The Edens. I grew up near where The Edens comes to an end and turns into regular highway 41.

No surprise it was jammed up at 1pm. I avoid it at all costs. But for going from Evanston to MI , there’s really no good way around it.

I recall when I left IL on a Saturday morning, it wasn’t bad, but returning on Friday afternoon, it was as bad as being at home. Of course, Chicagoland is much larger than Seattle.

I’ll still take it over driving around Detroit, that got old fast.

I've never been to Detroit, but I'll take your word for it.
